About

A blog about William Scoresby Jr., the Greenland Whale Fishery, and Arctic exploration in the early nineteenth century.

Besides Scoresby’s published works, much of the material quoted here, or summarised for the 1811 voyage under the tag “1811” is taken from Scoresby’s journals, beautifully annotated by C. Ian Jackson in three volumes for the Hakluyt Society:

Unless otherwise indicated, quotations from Scoresby’s journals are taken from the three volumes edited by C. Ian Jackson, and published by the Hackluyt Society. In the case of the 1811 voyage, re-told day by day in 2011 to commemorate the 200th anniversary, I have used, among other sources, Volume I.

The Arctic Whaling Journals of William Scoresby the Younger. Volume I, The Voyages of 1811, 1812, and 1813. London: Hakluyt Society, 2003.

The Arctic Whaling Journals of William Scoresby the Younger. Volume II, The Voyages of 1814, 1815, and 1816. London: Hakluyt Society, 2008.

The Arctic Whaling Journals of William Scoresby the Younger. Volume III, The Voyages of 1817, 1818, and 1820. London: Hakluyt Society, 2009.
